NSE reported a 23% year-on-year rise in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹2,578 crore, supported by higher trading activity and growing revenue from listing and data services. However, lower exceptional expenses also contributed to improved profitability. The results highlight NSE’s strong market position, while competition and regulatory changes remain key factors to watch.
NSE Q2 Results FY27: Profit Rises 23% to ₹2,578 Crore – What Is Driving India’s Biggest Stock Exchange?
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has reported a strong performance for the second quarter of FY2026-27. The exchange recorded a 23% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit, supported by higher trading activity in the cash market and other segments.
However, there is more to these results than just profit growth. NSE’s revenue sources, trading volumes, operating margins and changing market conditions offer a better picture of how India’s stock market business is performing.
These are also the first quarterly results NSE has announced following its stock market debut in September 2026.
NSE Q2 FY27 Results: Key Financial Numbers
NSE reported consolidated net profit of ₹2,577.62 crore in Q2 FY27, compared with ₹2,098.47 crore in the same quarter last year.
Its consolidated revenue from operations increased to ₹4,066.80 crore from ₹3,676.80 crore in Q2 FY26. Total income reached ₹4,554.46 crore during the quarter.
Here are the important numbers investors should know:
| Financial Metric | Q2 FY27 | Q2 FY26 |
|---|---|---|
| Net Profit | ₹2,577.62 Cr | ₹2,098.47 Cr |
| Revenue from Operations | ₹4,066.80 Cr | ₹3,676.80 Cr |
| Total Income | ₹4,554.46 Cr | ₹4,160 Cr |
| EPS | ₹10.41 | ₹8.48 |
The numbers indicate that NSE continued to generate strong earnings despite changing trading regulations and increasing competition in the exchange business.
Why Is NSE Making Money From Stock Market Activity?
Unlike a manufacturing company, NSE does not depend on selling physical products. A major part of its business comes from transaction charges collected when investors and traders participate in market activities.
Whenever trading takes place through its platform, NSE can generate revenue through applicable transaction charges. During Q2 FY27, revenue from transaction charges increased 9% year-on-year to ₹3,035 crore, compared with ₹2,789 crore in the previous year’s corresponding quarter.
Another interesting development was the growth in NSE’s cash market activity. The average daily traded value (ADTV) in the cash market increased 24% year-on-year to ₹1,18,377 crore. This suggests that more money was changing hands in the equity cash segment during the quarter.
However, equity options activity showed comparatively slower growth. Its average daily premium turnover increased just 3% to ₹47,977 crore. This difference matters because it shows that growth in the stock exchange business is not coming equally from every trading segment.
NSE’s Other Revenue Sources Are Also Growing
Transaction charges are not the only source of income for NSE.
The exchange also generates revenue through market data, connectivity, listing services and other related activities.
Some important developments during Q2 FY27 include:
- Data feed and terminal services: Revenue increased 43% to ₹165 crore from ₹115 crore.
- Listing services: Revenue increased 70% to ₹150 crore from ₹88 crore.
- Operating investment income: Revenue increased 9% to ₹237 crore from ₹217 crore.
- Data connectivity charges: Revenue stood at ₹267 crore.
These businesses are important because they provide NSE with additional revenue beyond regular trading activity.
For investors, the growth in data and listing services is worth watching because these segments can help diversify the exchange’s revenue base.
One Important Detail Behind NSE’s Profit Growth
There is another financial detail that investors should not ignore.
NSE’s consolidated expenditure declined 51% year-on-year to ₹1,161 crore. As a result, operating EBITDA increased 107% to ₹3,079 crore, with an EBITDA margin of 76%.
But this improvement needs some context.
In Q2 FY26, NSE had recognised a provision of approximately ₹1,297 crore related to SEBI settlement fees involving the co-location and dark fibre matters.
Therefore, the sharp decline in expenditure partly reflects the higher expense recorded in the previous year’s quarter. Investors should not assume that the entire increase in operating profitability came from improved business efficiency.
This is an important difference between headline profit growth and the underlying performance of a business.
What Should Investors Watch Next?
NSE operates in a market where trading activity, regulations and competition can directly affect its financial performance.
One important area to monitor is the competition in equity derivatives, particularly index options, where rival exchange BSE has been gaining market share.
Changes in trading rules and taxes can also influence derivatives activity and transaction revenue.
At the same time, rising retail participation, higher cash-market turnover and demand for financial market data could support future growth.
NSE has also approved the sale of up to a 40% stake in its wholly owned subsidiary, National Coal Exchange of India Limited. Investors should watch for further details about this proposed transaction.
NSE’s Q2 Positive Performance
NSE’s Q2 FY27 results show that the exchange continues to benefit from India’s growing financial market activity. Revenue increased, net profit improved and its cash-market trading volumes recorded healthy growth.
However, the sharp rise in EBITDA should be viewed alongside last year’s exceptional regulatory-related expense. Competition in derivatives and regulatory changes also remain important factors.
For investors, the bigger question is not simply whether NSE can report higher profits in one quarter, but whether it can maintain revenue growth through multiple business segments while protecting its market position.
